Pines, a film in production by David S Kessler
The Pine Barrens of New Jersey, once seen as uninhabitable, has been home to many. Believed to be unprofitable, it gave birth to industries. Perceived inhospitable, it became refuge. Faced with eradication, it flourished. The Pines are a living contradiction, acres of remote forest within the nations most populated state. Rare plants and animals often found feet from busy roadways.
The Pine Barrens is a place that survives through the people who inhabit it and tell stories about it. Who are the people that keep these stories of the Pines alive? Which stories are true and which exist only in our imaginations?
The goal of the film is to portray the Pines, its stories and its people, not simply through fact but through its perceived identities – the different ways in which people think about the Pines – exploring the inseparable nature between experience and perception and the woods’ natural ability to further blur those lines.
We will be collecting interviews, hearing stories, exploring remote locations, understanding the history and ecology and befriending residents of the Pines.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about our goals during this stage of production. As we go forward, we are looking for interesting characters, stories, or locations. Feel free to contact us with suggestions or information – it would be greatly appreciated.
